Apple controls about 85-90 percent of the money spent on mobile applications, according to a Jaffray Senior Research. Great numbers, but this is not about competition with Android which, by the way, controls 10% that are left. Apple’s App Store has generated nearly $5 billion in revenues and $330 million went to Google. Nothing went to carriers, of course. So, this is more about Apple & Google vs. mobile operators.
Carriers spent tons of money to build 3G networks to provide users unlimited internet. It cost billions for carriers but for end-users it now costs peanuts. Needless to say this venture brought no profits, only losses. And now people use this channel to download apps through App Store. To top that, nowadays we have Wi-Fi spots in places where people actually use their phones, i.e. cafes, shops, at home, etc. So there are not that many people who even pay for mobile internet. This is a sad position for carriers to be in, with Apple and Google using their channels and paying no money for it. The report also says that the Android Market will grow, but even with that growth Apple will control more than 70 percent of money over the next 3-4 years. Not quite good news for carriers, right?
Not that we don’t like Apple and Google, but we have something to offer for mobile operators. Right now our Global USSD platform for developing and delivering mobile services attracts a large number of service providers. They are all eager to start using these services in mobile networks all around the world.
For carriers we have a special solution called Cloud Mobilizer which can help them to finally get money from services which are launched in their networks. Generally speaking, it allows being present in value chains where previously carriers were left out. It can use all channels – iPhone, Android, SMS, USSD, Java, and WAP. We already have services which are bound to double or even triple revenue in such spheres as mobile finance, advertising and social services.
